Here’s your chance to pick up a Luftwaffe style Field Division Sumpftarn pattern ground combat smock. Different from the standard issue smock in that it was never set up for use with shoulder straps. Does not have the steel hook and eye at the collar nor the under collar fastening tab. Lacks belt hook support holes and never had a national eagle installed. The smock body made of cotton fabric overprinted in Sumpf pattern in contrasting olive and red brown colors. The rear panel is a heavier piece of cotton twill of slightly contrasting colors. Splinter camouflage material is used under the collar. Lined at the vented armpits with ribbed blue grey cotton with pocket bags of ribbed tan cotton. Black size stampings including 102 chest plus RBNr. With standard painted pebbled buttons at front closure and used for hip pockets. Small dished steel buttons are used at the internal pocket and cuffs. Appears to have been worn a bit, there are a few picks to the fabric and a small light stain to the left cuff. Partially as a result of this combat experience, the Luftwaffe had become one of the most sophisticated, technologically advanced, and battle-experienced air forces in the world when World War II broke out in 1939. In addition to its service in the West, the Luftwaffe operated over the Soviet Union, North Africa and Southern Europe. Despite its belated use of advanced turbojet and rocket propelled aircraft for the destruction of Allied bombers, the Luftwaffe was overwhelmed by the Allies’ superior numbers and improved tactics, and a lack of trained pilots and aviation fuel. In January 1945, during the closing stages of the Battle of the Bulge, the Luftwaffe made a last-ditch effort to win air superiority, and met with failure. With rapidly dwindling supplies of petroleum, oil, and lubricants after this campaign, and as part of the entire combined Wehrmacht military forces as a whole, the Luftwaffe ceased to be an effective fighting force.
