An outstanding complete set, which starts off in 1938 before the war, and continues until August 1944 when Ludwig Maurer is killed in action. Maurer was awarded the Iron Cross 1st Class, the Close Combat Clasp in Silver, and the German Cross in Gold and saw all of his service on the Eastern Front. The letters reflect promotions as well, starting from an Unteroffizier in 1940 and being the rank of a Hauptmann by 1944. There is also a large amount of letters from his brother as well, Josef Maurer, who was an Obergefreiter. Letters offering condolences to Ludwig’s family are also present in the grouping. Some family photos are part of the group as well. Translations of some of the letters, as well as information regarding his family, rank, and service are included. The Heer was the land forces component of the Wehrmacht, the regular German Armed Forces, from 1935 until it ceased to exist in 1945 and then formally dissolved in August 1946.
