Here is your chance to pick up an Iron Cross which seems to have been converted into a Knights Cross. This example has the suspension ring belt long ways like the knights cross, to hold a neck ribbon. The suspension ring is maker marked 24 for the producer Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Hanauer Plakettenhersteller. There is no recent wear or bend marks to the ring, and this is has obtained from the estate. While I have no way to prove if this was a period conversion, I also cannot dispute the possibility that it was at the same time. Consider this piece a leap of faith like the numerous examples shown in period photographs. An interesting curiosity piece and far cheaper than an official piece. The Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross was the highest award in the military and paramilitary forces of Nazi Germany during World War II. The Knight’s Cross was awarded for a wide range of reasons and across all ranks, from a senior commander for skilled leadership of his troops in battle to a low-ranking soldier for a single act of military valour. The award was instituted on 1 September 1939, at the onset of the German invasion of Poland. Just over 7,000 were awarded during the course of the war.
