Here’s your chance to pick up a rather scarce bayonet which is certainly not often seen. Here we have a Weimar era police bayonet which was cut down and repurposed during the Third Reich. This bayonet has the number 443 engraved into the cross guard for the police regiment which it was from, and has evidence that another number was ground off. Matching numbers. A nice police dress bayonet complete with the original frog. The scabbard leather is in great condition with no cracking. Maker marked to Weyersberg Kirschbaum & Cie from Solingen. Heinrich Himmler, head of the SS, was named Chief of German Police in the Interior Ministry on 17 June 1936. Traditionally, law enforcement in Germany had been a state and local matter. Himmler gained authority as all of Germany’s uniformed law enforcement agencies. The police were divided into the Ordnungspolizei (regular police) and the Sicherheitspolizei (security police). The Ordnungspolizei assumed duties of regular uniformed law enforcement (including fire brigades) while the SiPo consisted of the secret state police known as the Gestapo and criminal investigation police.
